Carotenoid Protection against Oxidation

چکیده

Based on experimental observations made in photosynthetic organ— isms which lacked colored carotenoid pigments, a hypothesis was developed that these pigments could serve as protective agents against photosensi— tized oxidations. Over the last 20 years, many workers have confirmed this hypothesis and have extended the observations to non—photosynthetic bacteria, plants and animals. It has also been possible to demonstrate carotenoid protection in in vitro systems. This article reviews the major mechanisms whereby carotenoid pigments protect cells against harmful photo— sensitized oxidations. The mechanisms include; (1) Carotenoid quenching of triplet sensitizers. (2) Carotenoid quenching of 02 (Lg). (3) Carotenoid inhibition of free radical reactions.

Evaluation of biomass production, carotenoid level and antioxidant capacity produced by Thermus filiformis Using fractional factorial design

A fractional factorial design 2(5-1) was used to evaluate the effect of temperature, pH, and concentrations of yeast extract, tryptone and Nitsch's trace elements on the biomass, total carotenoids and protection against singlet oxygen by carotenoid extracts of the bacterium Thermus filiformis. In addition, the carotenoid composition was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography conne...

Role of cloned carotenoid genes expressed in Escherichia coli in protecting against inactivation by near-UV light and specific phototoxic molecules.

Genes controlling carotenoid synthesis were cloned from Erwinia herbicola and expressed in an Escherichia coli strain. Carotenoids protect against high fluences of near-UV (NUV; 320 to 400 nm) but not against far-UV (200-300 nm). Protection of E. coli cells was not observed following treatment with either psoralen or 8-methoxypsoralen plus NUV. However, significant protection of cells producing...

Eye Nutrition in Context: Mechanisms, Implementation, and Future Directions

Carotenoid-based visual cues and roles of carotenoids in human vision are reviewed, with an emphasis on protection by zeaxanthin and lutein against vision loss, and dietary sources of zeaxanthin and lutein are summarized. In addition, attention is given to synergistic interactions of zeaxanthin and lutein with other dietary factors affecting human vision (such as antioxidant vitamins, phenolics...

Radiation protection properties of Myrtus communis against oxidation caused by whole-body exposure of mice

Introduction: Exposure to ionizing radiation can be through direct hit or water radiolysis lead to oxidation in biological systems. In this study, the protective effect of Myrtus Communis aqueous extract on structural changes and oxidative stress in red blood cells and plasma proteins was examined after receipt of ionizing radiation. Materials and Methods: wis...

The oxidation handicap hypothesis and the carotenoid allocation trade-off.

The oxidation handicap hypothesis proposes that testosterone mediates the trade-off between the expression of secondary sexual traits and the fight against free radicals. Coloured traits controlled by testosterone can be produced by carotenoid pigments (yellow-orange-red traits), but carotenoids also help to quench free radicals. Recently, it has been shown that testosterone increases the amoun...
